AAM to Receive Fourth Annual Smiy Award for Labor-Management Cooperation

The Alliance for American Manufacturing was selected as the 2008 Smiy Award for Labor-Management Cooperation recipient.  The group is comprised of both union and employer representatives dedicated to promoting American manufacturing by researching the current industry climate and educating the public on the dramatic turns manufacturing has taken in the U.S. over the past few years.

The award presentation will take place in early spring.

 

2008 WCALMC Labor-Management Studies Scholarship Winner

The WCALMC co-chairmen presented a $500 scholarship check to Jon Cotchen, a senior at Ligonier Valley High School, at last summer's golf outing.  Ranked first in his class, Jon was also a standout athlete and school leader.  Jon will be attending the University of Chicago to major in Economics.  Congratulations to this outstanding student on all of his accomplishments!

 

WCALMC & Westmoreland-Fayette WIB Work to Expand Local Building & Construction Industry Partnership

WCALMC will continue to partner with the Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board to coordinate activities for the Westmoreland-Fayette Building & Construction Trades Industry Partnership.  The WIB received $376,000 in partnership and incumbent worker training funds to expand partnership efforts in the region.

The partnership focuses on current and future workforce needs, as well as other areas of mutual concern.  Both pre-apprenticeship and incumbent worker training will be offered under the grant.  Funding will also be used to facilitate several youth education initiatives, including a construction career day and summer construction camps for middle school youth, as well as several other initiatives aimed at promoting the construction industry.

2009 Summer Construction Camps

The Westmoreland-Fayette Building & Construction Industry Partnership will sponsor three construction camps for middle school youth in June.  Each camp will be held at a local Career & Technology Center and will provide hands-on projects, as well as field trips and interaction with industry representatives.

Eastern & Northern Westmoreland CTC Camps: June 8-12

2009 Summer Health Care Camp

The Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board is also assisting with the organization of a health care exploratory camp for middle school students, which will be held at Eastern Westmoreland CTC in Latrobe, PA.  This camp will also be held from June 8-12 and will feature hands-on activities, field trips, and industry speakers.  For more information, contact Lisa Newhouse at the WIB at 724-755-2145.

2009 Summer Manufacturing Camp

The Southwest PA Tech Prep Consortium and Eastern Westmoreland CTC will also offer a manufacturing exploratory camp for middle school students from June 8-12.  The camp will feature rocket and robotic building, as well as CNC machining, field trips, and guest speakers.  For more information, contact Julianne Metzger at at WCCC at 724-925-4161.

2009 WCALMC Annual Scholarship for Labor-Management Studies

Again this year, WCALMC will sponsor a $500 scholarship for a Westmoreland County resident, who will be graduating from a local high school and has plans to attend an accredited post-secondary institution.  Students who will be majoring in a labor relations field of study (please see requirements on brochure) are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

Deadline for application submission is April 8, 2009.
